Detection Tools

The following list contains some of the more popular ghost hunting tools for detecting ghosts.

EMF Detector

EMF Detectors are used to measure changes in the electromagnetic fields in the surrounding area. It is common belief that spirit activity generates electromagnetic fields and can be picked up by one of these detectors.

Ion Detector

Another common belief is that fluctuations of the ions in the air are an indication of spirit activity. If you combine both an Ion Detector and an EMF Detector then you have a double level of detection.

Dowsing Rods

A dowsing rod or pendulum when used properly can be helpful to determine responses to questions or detecting ghostly activity when other methods such as EVP or Film are not available, although not useable as definitive evidence it can be a first step in contact.

Thermometers

A thermometer can be a valuable tool for the ghost hunter, a sudden or severe drop in temperature can indicate spirit presence. A non-contact style digital thermometer is the better option as this will allow you to scan a large area quickly and will also respond to temperature changes faster.

Pets

Yes, we said pets. It may seem unusual or even silly but animals have some senses that are more advanced than humans. Cats and Dogs have been seen to be able to detect unseen spirits or entities and can be useful in an investigation, however it is advisable that if you are to use an animal in your investigation that it be one that lives or frequents the area you are studying rather than to bring your own pet along to each site. This will reduce any problems from your pet being unfamiliar with the area which can cause confusion and fear for your pet, and a pet that is familiar with your investigation site and whatever spirits may reside there is more likely to give you some useful guidance.
